Description:
The GIN application was developed by SLF as an open source software on behalf of the Lainat and has been in operation since 2010. The Source Code of Gin is completely owned by the Federal Administration and may be adapted and further developed. The specialist application collects and visualizes current measurement and observation data from:
* Federal Office for the Environment Bafu
* Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology Meteoschweiz
* WSL institute for snow and avalanche research SLF
* Swiss earth development SED
The information includes around 90 measuring sizes (e.g. wind strengths, water levels, snow depths, etc.) Of over 600 weather, 300 water and 150 snow measuring stations. The data is sometimes updated every 3 minutes. Measuring data from cantons and stations of private providers are also integrated on gin.
The GIN application is designed for natural hazards experts and is currently only available. The platform is used intensively by the users, especially when natural and extreme events (e.g. storms, floods or avalanches). Around 3,500 users are currently registered with gin. The tendency is rising. Because of the complex content and the many Functionalities and the lower resolution can only be used to a limited extent on mobile devices (smartphones). The use of gin on mobile devices, especially in the event of an event, is becoming increasingly important and is desired by a large part of the users.
