- Description:
- In order to enable the renovation of the existing - around 17 km long - Gotthard road tunnel, the Federal Council, Parliament and the population have decided to build a second tube. The BSA equipment of the second tube, referred to as the North tube, will take place in part between 2027 and 2030 parallel to the completion of the structural work. Immediately after the opening of the North Tube for two-way traffic, the existing tube, known as the South Tube, will be replaced. The structural renovation is scheduled between 2030 and 2036. The existing BSA equipment of the Due to its age, the south tube will be completely dismantled. This will be followed by structural renovation and new BSA equipment. In addition to the main work that involves the realization of the second tube, the project also includes the redesign of the Airolo connection and the construction of the GdA gallery, which covers a 1km section of the highway (km 108,140 107,050). In its final state, the GdA will be operated with two lanes in each direction per tube.
