- The BLS operates a traction power control system with which the entire traction power network is monitored and controlled remotely. The BLS traction power network includes the 15kV/16.7Hz network for supplying electric locomotives in rail traffic and the 16kV/50Hz network for the energy supply in the Lötschberg Base Tunnel (LBT). In addition, the BLS traction power control system also monitors and controls systems in the SBB traction power network. In the traction power switchgear, decentralized controls record the measured values, switching states and Events and transmit them via the control levels to the central network control center in Spiez. In the opposite direction, control commands are sent by the operators to the switchgear. The network control system in Spiez is therefore considered a central instrument for this Operation of the BLS and SBB traction current networks in the Aare Valley and Upper Valais. The hardware of the network control system is located in the operations center in Spiez and a redundant system is located separately in the switching station in Spiez. The systems are provided by the Operators monitored and remotely controlled around the clock from three control stations. The current Power5 system from Siemens was purchased in 2012, underwent hardware and software replacement in 2019 and will reach the end of the system in 2027 technical service life.
