The Guntelsey shooting range is the largest open-air shooting range in Switzerland. The complex is classified as worthy of preservation by the cantonal monument preservation authority. It was built in 1968/69 and a kitchen extension was added in 1974. 63.7% of it belongs to the city of Thun and 36.3% to the federal government. The facility is used by the military, the Bern Cantonal Police and the United Rifle Society (VSTG).
The strategic goal of the Office for Urban Real Estate AfS is: long-term preservation of the shooting range and low operating costs. In recent years, several renovations and conversions have been carried out, including the renewal of the flat roofs. In 2024/2025 a feasibility study for the energy renovation was drawn up and the AfS decided Pursue the renovation project according to the feasibility study and plan and implement the following measures:
. Energy-saving renovation of the building envelope
. Partial replacement of the building technology (including replacement of the oil heating and replacement of lights
. Installation of a larger lift system (goods lift)
. Clean up the Security and fire protection (e.g. adding escape stairs)
. Seismic safety upgrade
. Reorganization of the toilet facility
. Examination of installation of additional cloakrooms (implementation is open)
. Implementation of further small maintenance measures
